Cybathlon 2018: Russian team has got bronze
Student team «Brainstormers» from Moscow state University won a bronze medal at the Cybathlon competition 2016.
Cybathlon is the first international championship para athletes assisted by technology, competing in six different disciplines, including BCI. In the BCI race, pilots had to control video games with their minds. The Russian team was in the third position, winning the bronze medal in the UK.
The team developed an asynchronous BCI capable of recognizing various mental patterns from the EEG(electroencephalography) signals recorded by our pilot Alexander and matching them to the various commands used in the game. The system is obviously very complex, as it involves the development of different interaction skills. One of the most difficult tasks of implementation was a multi-class grouping. A group consistency algorithm was used for solving this task
Brainstormers had tremendous support grant research innovation Fund “Russian Technologies” and a crowdfunding campaign which raised more than 5000$. Research, held in conjunction with the Brainstormers, do not remain without attention of the media, including NTV, REN-TV, the “Innovations” magazine.
